THE TIGERS ARE COMING

Well Folks

The Tigers are on their way to Sydney in a couple of days.

Let’s hope with the attitude that they leave Sydney with the four competion
points no matter what it takes.
The last 3 years have been horrid,we don’t want a repeat.

Personally I can’t see Richo making the trip in some doubt,a shame we don’t
get to see the big man in the flash.

From a team point of view not such a bad thing,we seemed to go okay when he went off
on Saturday,I think the other blokes realise they have to step up.
Not saying that he isn’t an important player but Sydney seem to match up on him
well and sit right on him, because the SCG is not a proper AFL ground, which let’s
agree it is not,he doesn’t have the space he does elsewhere.

So a big weekend ahead lots happening so get into the spirit and support the mighty Tigers.

RICHMOND has named an unchanged team for this week’s clash with Sydney, but doubt still hangs over superstar Matthew Richardson’s fitness.

The 34-year-old strained a glute muscle in last Saturday’s win over North Melbourne, and although he returned to the ground late in the match, his movements were seriously restricted.

Jay Schulz, who kicked has kicked 10 goals in the past fortnight for Coburg in the VFL, has been named in the 25, along with running defender Andrew Raines and midfielder Shane Edwards.

Richmond football manager Ross Monaghan said he expected Richardson to play, assuming he got through training on Friday.

“There’s every chance that he’ll play – he’s selected, so unless something unexpected happens he’ll play,” Monaghan told richmondfc.com.au.

Nathan Brown was left out of last weekend’s team that beat North Melbourne because of a groin injury, and Monaghan said the club felt that Brown’s long-term interests would be best served with another week on the sidelines.

“Nathan won’t play at all this week. He was touch and go but we think another week’s rest, with the condition he’s got, is going to do him the world of good.”

Executive Summary: We Beat the Kangas! BOOYAH!

It is a basic human trait that when we get excited we make rash decisions. Sometimes we can almost taste the goals as we sprint away from a pack, opting to have a wild snap from a tight angle instead of dishing off to a better-positioned team mate; sometimes we book flights to Melbourne with the cheapest airline, departing 5 hours before the match. In both cases we haven’t really thought about the consequences of something going wrong…

…as myself, my brother and my good mate (both North Melbourne supporters) were walking across the tarmac at Tullumarine on Satuday afternoon, our Tiger Airways (FLYING TIGERS!) flight having taken off right on time and arrived early, I thought to myself “could this be an omen?”. Fortunately I don’t really believe in omens because as we stepped out of the hotel the rain came bucketing down – sideways. We dashed into a bar for shelter (and a drink) and I started offering the spare ticket I had to random people. The first person I saw and offered the ticket to turned out to be triple-Premiership player and Brisbane assistant coach Justin Leppitch, but apparently he already had a ticket (who knew?).

I’d already seen the teams as named on Thursday and I knew that Mark Coughlan, the 2003 Jack Dyer Medallist, was going to run out on the park for the first time since Round 12, 2006 and I knew that I, at least, would give him a standing ovation. When Cogs marked the ball on the wing, every Tiger in Etihad Stadium was either on the feet or sounded like they wanted to be. After weeks of losses and many poor performances – this was what I had really been looking forward to. And despite Firrito dominating early midfield play and North Melbourne having an early lead, I bloody loved it.

Being on the other side of the ground, none of us could see which North Melbourne player it was who went down in a Daniel Jackson tackle in the first and was helped off the ground. I heard no information from MMM’s woeful radio commentary of the match until quarter time; perhaps I missed it, but to me the commentators seemed disinterested and too busy talking about general football issues to give a consistent play-by-play. As it turned out, the player was North captain Brent Harvey and following him off the ground also injured in quarter one was Firrito. It was not long later that the game started to turn around. Firrito returned for the start of the 2nd quarter, but Harvey’s night was over.

Robin Nahas was hard at it in the forward line, chasing, making space and finding his own ball and in one of his best performances to date, Richard Tambling was providing his teammates with drive through packs and dish-off options in tight situations. The Tigers’ desire and willingness to get the hard ball – and keep it – gave us two late goals in the first quarter and by quarter time, we were only one straight kick behind.

RICHMOND 2.2 (14)

NORTH MELBOURNE 3.2 (20)

When Richo appeared to pull his hamstring (turns out it was a strained glute) and hobbled from the ground early in the 2nd quarter, things were not looking rosy, though to be fair, both teams had now lost their primary big guns. The loss of Richo, however, did not dampen the Tigers spirit and they battled on through Nahas and Jack Riewoldt who was fantastic as our primary lead-up forward with 3 goals – all in the 2nd term – and 14 marks for the game. By half-time, the Tigers were in front by 7 points and my companions were getting cranky with their team.

RICHMOND 6.7 (43)
NORTH MELBOURNE
5.6 (36)

The second half was all yellow and black with Daniel Jackson, Brett Deledio, Shane Tuck, Matt White and – yes – Mark Coughlan owning the middle, Chris Newman, Joel Bowden and Jordan McMahon controlling the Kangaroos forward line and Nahas, Riewoldt, Tambling and Morton continuing to fire up forward. Richo returned in the 3rd quarter, but had little additional impact. By 3-quarter-time the margin was 27 points, I was already hoarse and at least one North fan was calling for his team to be replaced with the half-time kids.

RICHMOND: 10.12 (72)
NORTH MELBOURNE:
6.9 (45)

Not to get carried away with the win – the Kangaroos played some terrible football and missed many opportunities in front of goal, however, the fact that the Tigers could for the first time this season, captialise on that terrible play and engineer goals was heartening. The fact that they came away with a convincing win against a higly fancied opponent was cause for heady celebration (well into the next morning). The fact that Mark Coughlan finished the game with 16 touches, 5 marks and 5 tackles was cause for screaming yourself hoarse. The fact that Tiger Airways managed to get myself and my forlorn companions back home in driving rain and very high winds only 15 minutes over-time was a fitting end to a brilliant 24-hours.

 RICHMOND: 13.16 (94)
NORTH MELBOURNE:
7.16 (58)

 Booyah.

PS: Tiger Airways boards their planes on the tarmac, so driving rain and high winds were also cause for us to think the $50 extra for another airline (and a covered gantry) might be worth it on days like Sunday.

AUCTION FOR RICHMOND PRINT

NO BIDS AS AT FRIDAY 24/4/2009 -3-30PM

RICHMOND SQUAD

Nathan Brown has succumbed to a groin injury and will miss Saturday night’s clash with North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium. Brown’s exit from the team has opened up an opportunity for Richmond best and fairest Mark Coughlan to return to senior level for the first time since 2006. Coughlan has shone for Coburg in the VFL after a knee injury on the eve of the season, and is one of four inclusions for the ANZAC Day match.
Richard Tambling returns to the line-up after one match in the VFL, while Adam Pattison has fully recovered from an ankle injury and Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls has been rewarded for consistent form in the VFL.
Along with the injured Brown, Troy Simmonds, Tom Hislop and Daniel Connors have been omitted from the team.
North Melbourne v RichmondSaturday April 25Etihad Stadium, 7.20pm
B: Newman, Moore, Rance
HB: McMahon, McGuane, Polo
C: Richardson, Tuck, Collins
HF: Tambling, Riewoldt, Bowden
F: Pattison, Morton, Deledio
Foll: Graham, Jackson, Foley
Interchange: Coughlan, Oakley-Nicholls, Nahas, White
Emergencies: Edwards, Schulz, Thursfield
In: Coughlan, Pattison, Tambling, Oakley-Nicholls
Out: Brown (groin), Hislop, Simmonds, Connors

Great to see Mark Coughlan back,a real reward for perserverence.
Hopefully he can be the star he once was,it has been a long time, but one
thing I do know he will put his head over the ball and give 100 per cent.

Nathan Brown out injured.once upon a time this would be a huge loss, not so at the
moment, sadly I think Nathan is thinking more about his clothing store then performing
well as an AFL player,he could come back to prove me wrong.
Not suprised about Troy Simmonds, hasn’t been playing well,I think Angus Graham is finally starting to come along, looking at him up close on Sunday,he is a big boy with a very strong body.
Everybody’s favourite Patto is back,he’s not the most skilled player in the AFL but always give an effort.
Connors out,I think he sustained a muscular injury but disappointed in his game.
Tom Hislop out,I hope this is not another recycled player recruited to the Club that’s gone wrong.

Ben Cousins still in cotton wool,Trent Cotchin back to Coburg, let’s hope he’s back soon.
Everybody’s punching bag,Richard Tambling is back,I’m sure this won’t please everybody
but hopefully he gives us something.
Oakley-Nicholls is in,not sure about this one, hope he has improved since the last time he played Senior footy.
So there it is,can we win,we sure hope so.

I just reckon they need to be given a good revup and challenged to show some pride
in their performance and start playing as a Team and not just worrying about themselves.
Interesting thought on last week’s Footy show when Browny was on and the panel were
discussing Richmond.
Sam Newman reckons you only play for yourself and this helps the team’s performance,he is a dickhead,Shane Crawford said you play for each other, last time I checked Shane Crawford won a premiership this decade.

This is a chance for the team to back Terry Wallace but going out and doing everything they possibly can to win,if they don’t it would appear Terry has lost the group.

The game is on Anzac Day,first and foremost remember how lucky we are to live in this
wonderful country and the sacrifices many men and women made to make this country
what it is today.
Remember those who gave their lives so that we could live in a great Country.

The game is on at Saturday 7-20PM and will be shown Live on Fox 518 at the Camelia Grove Hotel.
Hope to see you there.
It’s not too late to get tickets to the function on May 2nd.

WHERE TO NOW

G’Day Folks

Well I woke up this morning,two arms,2 legs,still
a rough head(unfortuantely),no hangover (suprisingly)
so the world’s all not bad.

Our beloved Tigers are struggling and we do love them
because we have followed them through thick and thin.

So we thought last week was bad, well it gets worse when we can’t beat Melbourne.

As Dale Weightman said to me after the game they are not a good side, this is a team we should be beating easily .
I won’t bore you with too much garble but who to blame, players, coach(s) or both.
You have to remember Terry Wallace is the Senior Coach, but he does have Assistants ,but ultimately the buck stops with him.
Personally I think a bit of both-Players poor skill errors, poor decison making.
There were numerous times when we were bringing the ball through the corridor from half back and we persisted in one handball too many when we should have been kicking long, when we did kick long we ultimately kicked goals.
Kicking the ball backwards and handballing to players in worse position well that’s just no good.
We need to take the game on more.
Are these instructions from the Coach.
On the Coach,I’ve Coached Senior Rugby, the principles are the same.
The Coach motivates the players, inspires the players, ensures they are always fully prepared for various situations in a game and that they follow instructions.
Is this happening now,perhaps not.
However the players came out in the second half and they were able to lift,so Terry must be able to get something out of them, but the game goes for 4 quarters and we don’t seem capable of sustaining an effort for 4 quarters.
What happens next, well there is a meeting between the Coach and the Board tonight,so that normally doesn’t
bear well for the Coach.

In conclusion I would like to say this that yesterday
Joel Bowden was outstanding.
44 possessions with about 80 to 90 per cent efficiency.
He is one player in our team who can kick the ball 40 to
50 metres to one of our players.
He could do no more,I will eat humble pie because I thought he was past his best.
And of course Richo again one of our best 4 goals 5 not the best return but clearly he was only avenue to Goal.

On another note don’t forget we have our function on Saturday May 2nd.
Ticket sales are slow,we need more numbers, please support us and support your Club, the Richmond Football Club, and in some small way, hopefully we can help them to
become a winning club.

Kind Regards

TIGERS DOWNED AGAIN

G’Day Folks

If you happened to go away for Easter and missed the Tigers
v Bulldogs game,I am sorry to say you didn’t miss much.

After leading at quarter time and keeping the Dogs goaless, well the next
three quarters were very painful and the final score
Western Bulldogs 110-Richmond 63.

The Match Report is below.

Let me say this was another disappointing performance by the Richmond Football
Club and quite frankly it was very hard to watch.
More changes are needed, some guys just shouldn’t be there.
At the moment we are a team who really are struggling and will still be anchored
to the bottom of the ladder.
Thanks to those 20 hardy soles that attended the Camelia Grove Hotel to watch
the team and support our sponsor.
Your loyalty as a Richmond supporter is outstanding but really they do test our
patience.

Next week we are up against Melbourne,a win and nothing elsewould be expected.
Yours truly will be down to watch the game, you can’t accuse me of not being
loyal, but again the game will be shown at Camelia Grove Hotel, and there will be a lucky door prize of a bottle of white wine,so there is some incentive to come along.

Today’s winner picked up a $30-00 Coles Gift Voucher, with many thanks to Steve Dorman.

Let’s hope that whatever happens at Tigerland in the course of the next few weeks that
sooner than later,we are rewarded for our loyalty.

MATCH REPORT

RICHMOND remains winless in 2009 after a final quarter show from Brownlow Medallist Jason Akermanis spurred the Western Bulldogs a 47-point victory, continuing their unbeaten run to start the season.

After Richmond led at quarter-time, the Bulldogs eventually ran out 16.14 (110) to 8.15 (63) winners in front of a strong Docklands crowd of 46,261 on Easter Monday.

The loss was Richmond’s third loss in as many matches this season, and it hasn’t beaten the Bulldogs in their last six meetings. Although the Tigers drew with the Bulldogs in round five last year, they have not overcome the Dogs since round three in 2005.

Although the Tigers were still within reach at three quarter-time, Akermanis nailed three goals in the opening five minutes of the final term, ensuring the red, white and blue were home.

It was a disappointing result for the Tigers, considering they led for a quarter and a half.

The Bulldogs landed seven behinds before Daniel Giansiracusa kicked their first goal of the day at the three-minute mark of the second term.

But the Dogs soon got a run on, and after Dale Morris put them in front for the first time at the 14-minute mark of the second term, the Tigers never regained the lead.

Shane Tuck won a game-high 33 touches, while Nathan Foley (28) and Nathan Brown (28) were next best. Superstar Matthew Richardson worked tirelessly for 22 touches and 12 marks, four of them contested.

Defenders Luke McGuane and Joel Bowden also battled hard.

Akermanis was the game’s leading goalkicker with four majors, while Lindsay Gilbee was his side’s top ball-winner with 28 touches. Daniel Cross also had 27 disposals.

The Tigers started promisingly, with Jack Riewoldt kicking the first goal of the match.

By quarter-time, Richmond had three on the board and a 16-point lead as the Doggies were held goalless.

The Bulldogs got their act together in the second term, booting six unanswered goals to hit the front.

Richmond effectively went goalless for a quarter – it didn’t score a major from the 22-minute mark of the first term until the 26-minute mark of the second quarter.

Matt White broke the drought when he pumped the ball into the Coventry End stands after receiving a pass on the run from Jay Schulz. White became Richmond’s first multiple goalscorer and helped peg the margin back to 15 points at half time.

The second term was also noteworthy for several moments, with Brett Deledio leaving the field under the blood rule after an incident with Bulldog Liam Picken. Soon after, defender McGuane provided one of the highlights of the day with a ’speccy’ over Akermanis. Moments later, ‘Aker’ was again in the thick of play when he hit the post from just metres out after receiving a handball under pressure from teammate Josh Hill.

Richmond opened the second half well, with a Brown goal bringing the margin back to 10 points, but it was another 20 minutes before the Tigers added another. In between, the Dogs added four in succession, breaking away to a 33-point lead. Goals from Tuck and Mitch Morton in red-time gave the Tigers some hope heading into the final stanza.

The 21-point lead was quickly blown out to 38 after Akermanis’ hat-trick of goals early in the final term, and the Tigers could only manage one goal, to Richardson, in the last quarter.

RICHMOND V GEELONG

Well Folks it’s on again.

A week can be a long time in football, especially
if you have a loss.

What’s happened last week is History,we will judge
the Tigers on how hard they come out this week.
By all accounts they have knuckled down at Training, and there has been
an emphasis on quick ball movement.
Let’s hope this happens and we hit targets.
Let’s also hope that we come out fired up,ready to crash and tackle
the opposition.

The game is at 2-10PM and will be shown on Fox Sports One.
Our co tenants of the Camelia Grove Hotel the Sydney Magpies also
have a game on Saturday at 2-10PM.
Whoever has the most numbers gets the main bar,but there is also a big
plasma in the beer garden,so either way we will get to watch the game.

If my Under 16’s game gets called off I will be there with bells on.
If we are playing please accept my apolgies.
I will definitely be there on Easter Monday for the Bulldogs game.

So hopefully we get a turn up on Saturday.
As an incentive there will be a lucky door prize-depending on numbers
option of a Coles Giftcard and or a Bottle of Wine.

So may the Tigers show their fighting spirit this week.
As the song says like the Tiger of Old
