TIGERS GO DOWN

COLLINGWOOD has progressed to the semi-finals of the 2009 NAB Cup, beating Richmond at Telstra Dome 1.13.10 (97) to 2.3.15 (51) on Thursday night in front of 37,121 fans.

Almost the entire focus pre-game was on the return to top-level football of former Eagle Ben Cousins, and the Brownlow medallist didn’t disappoint, racking up 21 touches despite still appearing to be not fully match fit.

The Magpies took over after half time and kicked the last eight goals to win by 46 points.

Both sides would have been heartened by the form of their youngsters or returning players.

In the yellow and black, Alex Rance was good across half-back, Daniel Jackson impressive on the wing, Robin Nahas showed good speed and nouse, former Port Adelaide player Adam Thompson got his hands on it a lot early, and Andrew Raines swept across half-back well.

The Tigers would also have been heartened by vice-captain Nathan Foley in the midfield, skipper Chris Newman in the backline, Brett Deledio in the midfield and forward Tom Hislop, who showed he can find the ball.

Troy Simmonds was also good in the ruck.
A couple of injuries came out of the game – former Tiger skipper Kane Johnson had a knee iced in the second term, while Magpie youngster Macaffer went up the race in the second term with concussion.

After the game, Richmond also cancelled a planned Ben Cousins press conference, saying their star recruit was suffering from concussion.

The Pies got off to a great start when John McCarthy took the spillage from a pack in the square and kicked truly. Josh Fraser accepted a handball from Scott Pendlebury and added another a minute later, and the Pies had the only goals until new Tiger skipper Newman booted a nine-pointer.

Fraser then returned the favour for Pendlebury to goal on the run from 45, but Nathan Brown marked and converted from close range, with youngster Nahas good in the buildup.

But Magpie youngster Macaffer marked close to goal and at the first break, and the Pies were up by a goal.

The second term was scrappy, with numerous skill errors from both sides, and nearly 14 minutes passed before Beams goaled for the Pies.

Matty White then replied with a supergoal less than two minutes later, but Travis Cloke provided the comedy.

He marked in the forward 50, kicked into the man on the mark, got it back, then missed to the left from 30, and the Pies led by that behind at the long break.

The Pies had the better of the third term – Didak kicked the first before Richmond’s No.8 pick from the 2008 NAB AFL Draft, Tyrone Vickery, was paid a downfield free and converted.

Soon after Matthew Richardson marked just inside the fifty and kicked truly to give the Tigers a five-point lead.

But then the Pies took over from that point – Tarkyn Lockyer was the recipient of some great work from Cloke, who flew, then gathered on the ground and fed the handpass.

Former Roo Leigh Brown goaled form a free kick and Dane Swan snapped form 20 and the Pies led at the last change by 11 points.

In the last it was still all Collingwood, the Magpies kicking all five majors of the term.

Collingwood will play the winner of Essendon and the Brisbane Lions in the semi finals, while Richmond head to Shepparton for a NAB Challenge fixture.

MATCH REPORT

RICHMOND has beaten Fremantle by three points in a thrilling NAB Cup match at Subiaco Oval on Sunday, inspired by evergreen champion Matthew Richardson.

Richmond found itself down 28 points early in the first quarter and still behind by 23 at half time, but a five-goal to nil third quarter and first two goals of the last put the Tigers up by 16 points.

However, Fremantle hit back once again to lead by nine points 16 minutes into the last term before Richardson’s second had the margin back under a kick. He then sealed the game with his third and a mark in defence on Fremantle’s last foray forward.

Richardson, who turns 34 in March, is coming off one of the best seasons of his decorated career in 2008 finishing third in the Brownlow Medal in a new role further up the ground.

It worked a treat once coach Terry Wallace tried it at Subiaco Oval against Fremantle in round 4, and on return he was brilliant again.

Spending most of the night on the wing before moving forward for the last quarter, Richardson dominated with 25 possessions, nine marks, a super goal and two regulation goals.

Mitch Morton and Nathan Brown also kicked three goals each, Jack Riewoldt two and 21 possessions, with Nathan Foley racking up 33 possessions, Brett Deledio 29, Daniel Jackson 29, Andrew Raines 27 and Shane Tuck 24.

Ben Cousins and Adam Thomson didn’t play and will have to wait at least another fortnight to turn out for a first game in Tigers colours, while Trent Cotchin, Mark Coughlan, Kane Johnson, Jake King, Will Thursfield, Jordan McMahon and Adam Pattison were also missing.

Fremantle got the jump on the Tigers with the first three goals of the game before Riewoldt nailed the Tigers first goal at the 15-minute mark and Richardson kicked a nine-pointer soon after.

Brown then kicked the first two goals of the second to bring Richmond within touch, but Fremantle kicked the last two goals to take a 23-point lead into the main break.

Riewoldt kicked his second goal to start the third quarter after taking a gutsy mark in the goal square that brought the Tigers within 17.

Shane Edwards then set up Morton with tremendous vision and he was able to kick truly to make the margin just 12. Brown then crumbed beautifully from a Richardson marking attempt to kick his third goal and the Tigers were on a roll early in the third term.

Rookie-listed player Robin Nahas, who came in as a replacement for Thursfield, then snapped truly from 15 metres with his first kick to make his mark on the contest and to bring the scores level at 56.

Morton marked and snapped truly near three quarter-time to put Richmond in front for the first time in the match, where they stayed at the last break to the tune of three points.

Morton’s third when he snapped on his left boot was the first goal of the final quarter and the Tigers had the last six goals of the game to be up by 11 points.

Richmond’s dominance when Cleve Hughes marked and goaled to put his team up by 16 points, but then a goal to Kepler Bradley and super goals to Stephen Hill and Garrick Ibbotson suddenly saw Fremantle lead by nine again.

Richardson’s dribbled snap went through to make the margin three points and in the dying seconds, Morton found himself in plenty of space inside 50. Riewoldt managed to get it to him, he handballed over to Richardson who ran into an open goal to seal the win.

Richmond will now face Collingwood in a fortnight’s time in the next round of the NAB Cup.

NEWSLETTER 1

Welcome to Season 2009,Tigers Supporters

There will be a Newsletter twice a week bringing you
up to speed about what’s going on with the Tigers
and events in Sydney.

At this time if you do not wish to receive emails, this is
the time to let you me know.

You would have received an email about Membership
of the Sydney Tigers,we are already up to 22 Members
which is great but always looking for more.

What I didn’t mention in previous email is that if you are
a Member of the Sydney Tigers and purchase a Country 5
Richmond Membership you will receive a $20-00 discount.

This was only brought to my attention by the new Supporters
Co-Ordinator of the RFC and I appreciate that a lot
of you would have purchased your memberships already.
But this is something to think about for next year.

We have a hard working committe with great ideas and we are looking to
grow the Sydney Tigers.

Well it’s hard not too get excited about season 2009,
it has been a long wait for a successful, consisent Richmond team
and hopefully that wait is over.

With the recruitment of a very fit looking Ben Cousins
who if he gets back to his best will be a great asset to our club
and an a team already on the up,it is hoped for
a very successful year.

Things are looking pretty smooth at Tigerland for now,
a New sponsor Luxbet, plenty of Members and the re-develolment
of Punt Road and a new Training facility at Cragieburn.

Our first game in the Nab Cup is on Sunday February 15
against Fremantle in Subiaco.

This game will be shown on Fox 1 at 8-30PM until 11-00PM.
It will be available for viewing at our Home Base the Camelia Grove Hotel.
The one catch being the Hotel shuts at 10-00PM,but they will
stay open until the game finishes, but you will not be able to come
and go after 10-00PM and bar service will cease about
10-15,I don’t imagine that will worry too many people with
a work day the next day.

So we hope to see as many of you as possible next Sunday.

We are looking at ways to encourage more people to watch the games
at the Camelia Grove Hotel and are negotiating with Management
to provide a $20-00 voucher for food or drinks.
If we are successful in securing this sponsorship, all present will
be given a raffle ticket at the start of the game and one ticket
will be drawn at half time.

Major Function Saturday May 2nd-Camelia Grove Hotel
Finger Food available-Auction Items-Past Richmond Player
Gift speaker(More details to follow)

After Match Function
