TIGERS SHOW HEART

Three weeks ago the Richmond Football Club copped a fair whack from
Caroline Wilson and Mike Sheahan(I actually don’t mind these reporters) about
where the Club was at,young players not developing,no signs of climbing up the ladder, etc, etc.

I am pleased to say that the RFC has shown a lot of good old fashioned guts and determination
to beat Fremantle easily in WA,draw with the undefeated Bulldogs and go within 2 goals of
Hawthorn,a team many expect to play in the Grand Final.

Yes Hawthorn were inaccurate, yes Buddy had a bad day,but the most pleasing thing
was that Richmond tried all day.
Sometimes our skills let us down but there has been a big improvement in the tackling
and pressure and every Richmond player was prepared to put his head over the ball.

The young players brought in are playing with a lot of tenancity, the often maligned Kane Johnson,is leading by example, the other midfielders Tuck,Foley,Tambling are working in and under,
Brett Deledio is showing he can be a good midfielder,Browny was class,Kingy makes the odd mistake
but don’t you love his endeavour,
Richo is sensational as always, the young backline are doing a good job,Mitch Morton is playing well,
there are others who deserve mention.
We have been starved for success for some time, but I am startiing to see a Richmond team playing with a consistent effort.
Yes there’s still a lot to work on but I see good signs, come along for the ride,it could be worth the wait.
Again a magnificent turnout at the Camelia Grove Hotel,we are getting great support and I
appreciate it.
Yours truly will be watching the next two Richmond games live but I hope as many of you as possible
can continue to get along to the Camelia Grove to watch the games.
Our next game is against St Kilda Saturday May 3rd at the Telstra Dome.
We have had trouble with St Kilda and playing at the Telstra Dome but we now have the foot spped
to play well at the Telstra Dome so I am expecting a good result.
MATCH REPORT BELOW

RICHMOND fell to Hawthorn by just 12 points on Sunday after pushing the unbeaten Hawks all day in a high-quality contest at the MCG.

Hawthorn held on to win 14.22 (106) to Richmond’s 15.4 (94) in front of 46,076 fans at the MCG.

After a first half of negating, ineffectual football Richmond pushed a wayward Hawthorn side all the way.

Hawthorn left the door ajar by its wasteful kicking for goal. Richmond’s tenacity deserved credit even though they had just over half the scoring shots of the opposition.

From the outset Richmond was under siege with Hawthorn doing all the attacking.

At all times the Tigers were trying to push numbers back to block the path to the big Hawk forwards Lance Franklin and Jarryd Roughead, and Richmond looked at times to be overly conscious of the in-form Franklin.

Matthew Richardson started well up the ground at each centre bounce, stationing himself on the wing and attempting to drop into Franklin’s leading space to assist the big Hawk’s direct opponent Kelvin Moore. Hawthorn had control of the ball in the first 15 minutes with Franklin, Mark Williams and Roughead finding the target.

Mitch Morton opened Richmond’s goal account and it sparked a yellow and black surge as Nathan Foley and co began to win a share of the ball out of the middle. A minute later Nathan Brown fashioned something out of nothing to goal from a confined space 40 metres out from goal.

When Kane Johnson and Shane Tuck kicked truly the Tigers had rattled on four goals in eight minutes and had cut the gap to five points.

Richmond was racking up plenty of touches but were falling into the trap of being corralled by Hawthorn. The Tiger defence was under plenty of pressure. Moore was sticking with Franklin, and while Richardson was totting up plenty of possessions he was not an attacking force.

Hawthorn was keeping Richmond in the contest with poor kicking for goal and had 4.9 on the board to 4.1. Franklin’s third behind barely scraped in as all but three Tigers were inside the defensive 50 metre arc. The Tigers were hanging in but didn’t look like creating their own attacking moves and the Hawks were dominating possession.

For much of the second quarter it was a scrambly dogfight in Hawthorn’s forward half with Richmond over-possessing with handballs to get itself out of trouble rather than generate attacks.

Roughead was given a free kick in the goalsquare and converted but he had been a prime offender with 1.3. He scored a second goal late in the term, but Richmond kept afloat with late goals to Richard Tambling and Nathan Brown. At half time Hawthorn led by 11 points despite having 11 more scoring shots. The most damning statistic was Richmond’s unbalanced ratio of 82 kicks and 126 handballs.

At the start of the third term Hawthorn coach Alistair Clarkson had pushed Franklin up the field and opened up the Hawk attack and it paid quick dividends with Roughead goaling three minutes into the quarter. Meanwhile Richardson had been shifted back to his customary place in attack and he outmarked his opponent Stephen Gilham to score a lovely goal from 50 metres.

Richmond was barely recognisable from the stodgy unit that had been on display in the first half and after goals to Jack Riewoldt, Brown and Jay Schulz the Tigers grabbed the lead for the first time all day.

Richmond went into the final term trailing by eight points and promptly made inroads as Richardson soccered a goal from the square after just 20 seconds. Hawthorn’s wayward shooting continued as Franklin’s scoreline moved to 1.7 after another miss.

Richmond kept working and Richardson made no mistake to goal from a free 20 metres out. With 12 minutes gone Hawthorn clung to a five point lead, but then Cyril Rioli crumbed perfectly after Kelvin Moore had done everything right in spoiling Franklin.

Again Richmond refused to knuckle under as Morton marked and kicked a running goal. Richmond’s valiant effort was ended by Hawthorn’s most successful forward for the night, Roughead, who kicked two goals in the space of two minutes.

THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY

Richmond have let a couple of good leads in the last quarter slip and had a draw with the Western Bulldogs.
It felt like a loss as at various stages of the last quarter a win looked inevitable.
We had another good turnout at the Camelia Grove which is great as the game was on free to air,but we all felt a bit flat at the end.
Thanks again for those who turned out.
Whilst we were disappointed not to win there were some really good signs for Richmond, playing
free flowing attacking footy and posting another big score two weeks in a row.
Unfortunately we just made a few errors in the last few minutes which allowed Western Bulldogs back into the game.
But I believe there are good signs and the changes that have been made i.e Edwards,Morton,
McGuane,Riewoldt,Matty White have been good for the team.
We have a tough task next week coming up against the undefeated Hawks.
Game is on Sunday at 4-40 MCG,coverage on Fox from 4-00PM.
We hope to have another good turnout at the Camelia Grove Hotel.

The WESTERN Bulldogs have snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat against Richmond at Telstra Dome, with a Will Minson goal with 14 seconds remaining tying the scores 19.16 (130) to 20.10 (130) after Richmond appeared home with just minutes remaining.

The Dogs, who remain unbeaten after five rounds, led at half time only for Richmond to take control in the second half.

Back-to-back goals to Matthew Richardson and Nathan Brown’s third for the match saw the Tigers scamper 24 points clear at the eight-minute mark of the final quarter. The Dogs then roared back into contention with goals to Daniel Giansiracusa, Ryan Griffin and Minson to get to within seven points, but Richmond steadied with Jack Riewoldt’s third for the game.

Troy Simmonds’ only goal of the afternoon at the 20-minute mark appeared to have ended the contest, putting the Tigers 19 points clear, but goals to Daniel Cross and Robert Murphy brought the Dogs back to a single kick with two minutes remaining. Enter Minson, who kicked truly from a set shot after teammate Brian Lake took a mark but was unable to take his kick. A mad scramble ensued at the next centre bounce, with neither side getting a shot on goal in the desperate last seconds.

The hugely entertaining match featured seven lead changes and 39 goals, and while the Dogs can count themselves lucky to escape with a draw, they’ll rue their first-quarter inaccuracy, where they kicked 4.10.

Richmond booted six goals to three in the third term to turn for home 12 points clear, with all six goals coming from individual goalkickers. Scores were tied on two occasions in the quarter before Shane Edwards’ second for the match gave the Tigers the lead at the 17-minute mark, the seventh lead change of the match.

A Riewoldt goal with 20 seconds to play in the term, his second for the game, gave Richmond a 15.8 (98) to 12.14 (86) lead at the final change.

The Dogs led by eight points at quarter-time and again at the main break, rueing their inaccuracy after having 20 scoring shots to 11 in the first half, which featured six lead changes.

The Dogs led 9.11 (65) to 9.2 (57) at the half after a series of runs by either team. The Dogs started the second term with two straight goals to captain Brad Johnson before Richmond kicked four in a row, two of them to former Bulldog Brown. The Dogs then answered with three goals in three minutes, the last of them from a barnstorming run through the middle by Adam Cooney, who had 12 first-half possessions.

The Dogs wasted a good start with a 4.10 return in the first quarter, with Scott Welsh the main offender with 0.3. The lead changed hands four times in the quarter, with a goal from Bulldogs ruckman Ben Hudson after the siren increasing the Dogs’ quarter-time lead to eight points.

For the Dogs, Matthew Boyd had 29 touches and Cross 24, with Lindsay Gilbee and Minson kicking three goals, the last the most crucial of his career. For the despondent Tigers, Brown, Richardson and Riewoldt all kicked three goals, while Kane Johnson had 25 possessions.

TIGERS SHOW HEART

In the lead up to Sunday’s game against Fremantle,Richmond copped a fair wack from the media.
There were two ways they could react, roll over or show some fight.
Most pleasing was they came out and played as well as they have for many years.
As usual the commentators wanted to tell us Fremantle were perfoming poorly.
But for once every Richmond player played well and this resulted in a comprehensive victory.
Kane Johnson was outstanding leading from the front,Richard Tambling played his best game for the club.
Other notable performers-Nathan Foley,Jordan McMahon showed a lot of run from the backline,
Graham Polak great up front,Richo on the wing, what an inspired move by Coach Terry Wallace.
Troy Simmonds did a great job in the ruck, young backline was again very solid.
Too many more to mention.
Richmond 20.17 137
Fremantle 10.13 73

Next game Sunday April 20 v Western Bulldogs 2-10 Telstra Dome

The game will be on Channel 7 at 3-00PM,delayed by an hour due to car racing.
So we will be watching the game at Camelia Grove on Sunday.

We had a great turnout on Sunday and everyone enjoyed the game immensely.
Hope to see as many of you as possible on Sunday.

A DAY AT THE ‘G’

Richmond v Collingwood at MCG, 70000-00 unfortunately most of the cheering
done by the Collingwood supporters.

Richmond again disappointing, first half particuarly, second half at least matched their score.
Just outclassed,outrun,out tackled.
Too many players not producing, time for change,I’m not going to bag players, you know who they are.
Watching the game live, you can see a lot unfold, too many Collingwood players un manned,no accountability from a lot of our players.
And of course the over emphasis on hand ball.
Make no mistakes though and it pains me to say it,Collingwood are a good side, very well drilled, disciplined, good foot skills.
They will be up there.

So we move onto Fremantle this week 4-40PM on Sunday on Fox Sports.
See those who can make it to the Camelia Grove to watch the game,we may be out the back for the first bit,as Collingwood and Carlton is on at 2-10PM.
It’s a tough lot following the Tigers at the moment, but I am a firm believer that when you follow a team, you follow them for life, through thick and thin.

On another note only 8 weeks until the Sydney Game, you would have received correspondence about when tickets go on sale and our various functions.
I do have some possible exciting news,Dale Weightman is a confirmed starter, and I had a phone call with Francis Bourke yesterday inviting him to our function, which he is seriuosly considering.
We also need to push the raffle tickets, yours truly has sold $400-00 worth of tickets at this stage,I did have some help from Sue Schlunke yesterday.
We are offering some good prizes,so need to sell at least 1000 tickets.
So if you haven’t already, please consider purchasing tickets in our raffle.
Finally make sure if you want tickets to the after match don’t delay in ordering them,as there are limited numbers.

Thanks again for your time
